Professor Eliane Gluckman invited to the workshop “WIS Women’s Health and Women in Health”

The AP-HP university hospital federation organized on Wednesday, November 20, a workshop entitled WIS – 2024 Women’s Health and Women in Health at the Georges-Pompidou European Hospital. The objectives and philosophy of WIS are to make women visible in science, to improve the attractiveness of women in health and research, to ensure better access to care for women and to create opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations.

Professor Eliane Gluckman, haematologist, emeritus professor at the Université Paris Cité, former head of the haematology department at Saint-Louis Hospital (AP-HP, Paris, France) and currently head of the Eurocord group at Saint-Louis Hospital and director of Monacord at the Monaco Scientific Centre (Monaco Principality), spoke in the session: inspiring testimonies of exceptional women, entitled “How to become a role model for women today at AP-HP?”

Eliane Gluckman is a remarkable role model for women in the medical field, particularly in haematology. Her exceptional hospital career has been marked by major scientific achievements, including the world’s first umbilical cord blood transplant and the establishment of bone marrow donor registries. Despite the obstacles of gender bias and lack of representation in leadership positions, she has built an impressive international reputation, becoming president of the European Society for Blood and Marrow Transplantation (EBMT), receiving numerous awards and over 900 publications. Her journey illustrates the importance of self-confidence, clear definition of goals, and consistent demonstration of competence.

Today, while only 13% of CME presidents are women, her testimony highlights the persistent challenges while providing an inspiring model of authority, respect, and sharing for future generations of women scientists.

The intervention was an extraordinary moment of sharing and exchange. The speaker captivated the audience with her insight, subtle humor, and great simplicity. With remarkable skill, she revealed her personal journey in a natural and authentic way, creating an immediate connection with the audience. Her talent for transmission and her ability to tell her story transformed her presentation into a truly inspiring and memorable experience, deeply touching each of the participants.
