Eliane Gluckman, MD, FRCP is Professor Emeritus of Hematology from Paris University. 

From 1976 until 2005, she was the Medical Director of the Bone Marrow Transplant Service and Head of the Department of Hematology at Hôpital Saint Louis in Paris. She is a member of several Scientific Societies, including: The European Marrow Transplant Society, World Marrow Donor Association, Netcord, American Society of Hematology, American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, European Hematology Association.


She received numerous awards and distinctions, including in France the ranks of Commander of The Legion of Honor and Grand Officier of the Order of Merite. She was President of the European School of Hematology from 2001 to 2015. She helped in the development of unrelated bone marrow registries and cord blood banks. Currently, she is the President and Chairperson of Eurocord and the leader of the “International Observatory of Sickle-cell Anemia.”


Her main research interests include haematopoietic transplantation for malignant and non-malignant diseases particularly for hereditary hematological diseases such as Fanconi anemia and Sickle Cell Disease. She performed the first successful human umbilical cord blood transplant, and successfully demonstrated that unrelated cord blood could be used as a source of hematopoietic stem cells. Currently her major research is to study Immunogenetics factors involved in the development of transplant complications in children especially in patients with sickle cell disease. Pr Gluckman has authored and co-authored more than 900 papers in peer-reviewed journals and contributed to various text books dealing with stem cell transplantation.
