EUROCORD was founded by Professor Eliane Gluckman in 1995. It was originally built as an International Registry of Umbilical Cord Blood transplants and stem cell therapies for malignant and non-malignant hematological diseases. In association with the ‘European Group for Blood and Marrow Transplantation’ (EBMT) and the ‘Société Française de Greffe de Moelle’ (SFGM), Eurocord collects and validates clinical data of patients transplanted with umbilical cord blood for hematological diseases. In July 2010, the Registry was transferred to the “Agence de la Biomédecine”, a French public administrative institution working under the responsibility of the French Ministry of Health, competent in organ, tissues and cells donation and transplantation. Eurocord-Study group, located in Saint Louis Hospital, Paris, is in charge of collecting, analyzing and interpreting clinical data and outcomes of patients transplanted with umbilical cord blood.
MONACORD, “The international Observatory on Sickle Cell Disease”, is a division of Eurocord born in 2012 thanks to the support of Prince Albert II and the Principality of Monaco’s Government. Monacord is hosted, since November 2013, in the “Centre Scientifique de Monaco”, as part of its Department of Medical Biology thanks to an agreement between the “Centre Scientifique de Monaco” and the Eurocord association. The goals of Monacord are to formulate clinical recommendations for the management of sickle cell disease and other hemoglobinopathies, to develop and coordinate actions for the diagnosis and treatment of sickle cell disease, especially by hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and other innovative cell therapies, and to disseminate knowledge on these topics, particularly in developing countries, for example in Africa.
