ASH 2015 Annual Meeting’s Highlights

The international Survey on Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation for Sickle Cell Disease (Abstract #7923).

Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation from HLA Identical Sibling for Sickle Cell Disease an International Survey on Behalf of Eurocord-Monacord, EBMT Pediatric Disease Working Party and CIBMTR

The final analysis was presented by Dr. Cappelli Lauro at the American Society of Hematology (ASH) that was held in Orlando on December 5-8 2015. ASH Annual Meeting is the world's premier event in malignant and non-malignant hematology. The meeting provides an invaluable educational experience and an opportunity to review thousands of scientific abstracts highlighting updates in the hottest topics in hematology. Network with top minds in the field, as well as a global community of more than 25,000 hematology professionals from every subspecialty.

The results of the international study on hematopoietic stem cell transplantation from an HLA identical sibling in patients with sickle cell disease were presented. This is the first international study on the use of HSCT for SCD. Data from 1000 children and adults who received an HLA identical sibling as first transplant in Europe, USA and Brazil.

The excellent results obtained in terms of overall survival and event free survival demonstrate that transplantation in SCD is feasible with acceptable risk of early and late complications if compared to the expected quality of life of severe SCD patients.

This study has therefore been distributed worldwide since it was selected for oral presentation and for a press conference, a publication for Highlights of ASH and best of ASH.
